Bespoke modern shaker kitchen.
in Welford-on-Avon.
This recent project saw Belford Handmade Interiors design, build and install a fully bespoke modern shaker kitchen for a family home in Welford-on-Avon, Warwickshire.
The brief was to create a timeless, handcrafted space that felt in keeping with the property while improving layout, storage and everyday functionality.
The Brief
Our long-standing clients — a family of five living in a large property in Warwickshire — approached us to redesign their existing kitchen. Having collaborated with them on several previous projects, including a home office, utility room, and a large home bar, we understood their aesthetic preferences and how they used their space day to day.
The goal was to modernise and brighten the kitchen while improving functionality and increasing storage. A key part of the brief was to transform the former Aga area into a beautifully detailed, fully functional walk-in pantry.
The Design
Every aspect of this kitchen is completely bespoke — from cabinetry, frames, and fronts to drawers with adjustable dividers, hidden light switches, and a custom paint colour created specifically for the project.
After exploring several layout variations, we arrived at a design featuring two central islands. This configuration allows for smooth movement throughout the space while significantly increasing storage. The main island is dedicated to cooking and food preparation, while the second serves as a breakfast bar with additional concealed storage.
We relocated the fridge, integrating it into the oven run, and in its place created a bespoke bookcase with a hidden door panel designed to discreetly store keys, mail, and other small items. The kitchen also includes a dedicated coffee station with space for a coffee machine, cups, and accessories. The sink is a Lusso Stone workstation sink, paired with a Quooker tap and Cube tank for instant boiling and filtered water.
The Result
The completed kitchen is a harmonious blend of craftsmanship and functionality — light, elegant, and beautifully practical. Every detail was tailored to the client’s lifestyle, creating a modern yet timeless space that connects seamlessly with the rest of their home.
To keep the pantry bright and inviting, we used reeded glass panels illuminated from within by soft lighting. As the room’s walls weren’t perfectly square, the top section was carefully boarded out to ensure the oak floating shelves fitted seamlessly.
Below the countertop, pull-out corner units maximise accessibility, while hidden push-to-open drawers were cleverly built into the exterior panels — three on each side — providing additional storage without disrupting the clean lines of the design.
Materials & Finishes
The kitchen combines a modern aesthetic with classic detailing to complement the character of the home. In-frame cabinetry with slim shaker doors provides a timeless base, while the main island contrasts with slab ash fronts, allowing the natural wood grain to shine through.
Everything is finished in a 5% matte paint across three coordinated tones — a soft variation between the main kitchen and island, and a custom earthy red on the pantry and glass cabinet for subtle depth and warmth.
The kitchen is primarily constructed from Finsa Hydrofugo MDF, with solid ash used for the pantry and island. Drawer boxes, the glass cabinet, and the coffee station feature lacquered oak veneer, while the remaining carcasses are finished in MDF-core oak melamine. Hardware is by Blum, lighting by Häfele, and the glasswork supplied by a local artisan.
